Mahogany Mahogany

There are many species throughout the world that carry the name of Mahogany.

The most common Mahogany in use in Australia is from the Philippines. There are 2 closely related species imported in quantity, both use the name ‘Red mahogany’, however one is classified as “dark’ whilst the other is ‘light’. Both also carry the common name of ‘lauan’, again categorised into ‘light’ and ‘dark’.

Origin : These range from Africa, through Cuba, Brazil, Mexico, the Philippines, Papua New Guinea and even some Australian species.

Colour : The dark mahogany has red to brownish heartwood with cream or pale grey sapwood, while the light mahogany has pale brown heartwood with the sapwood hard to distinguish.

Hardness : 2.8
